Matchbox Garden & Seed Co. was founded in 2006 by Hanna Jacobs. Over the years, we have provided the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas with fresh food through our CSA, farmers markets, and restaurant clients.
With our beginnings in the heart of the busy West Queen West, Toronto neighbourhood, Matchbox springboarded from the 1000sqft mini urban farm, to the Mcvean Incubator Farm run by FarmStart. Building relationships through our participation in the FarmStart program allowed us the privilege to work with many different people and organizations.
We have been fortunate enough to produce our seedlings at the Fresh City Farms Greenhouses, in Downsview Park, spend 3 years farming on Mcvean Farm in Brampton, as well as 1 year at The Living City Campus on Kortright in Vaughan, Ontario.
We currently operate the gardens on 3/4’s of an acre just outside Caledonia, Ontario. All our gardens are no till and on a minimum 4 year crop rotation. We use ally and companion planting as a key part of our Integrated Pest Management System. From the very beginning of my gardening journey, I applied organic methods to all my growing. One of the great motivations for the founding of Matchbox was, and still is, the desire to contribute to a more environmentally sustainable future.

In 2017, we will be focusing on growing locally pastured raised organic chicken and a variety of vegetables for sale through our CSA program, at markets in Sudbury and at Eat Local Sudbury Co-op Store.
All our food is raised following the organic regulations according to EcoCert. Our goal is to become certified in the next couple years as we transition our farm.

We grow a wide variety of heirloom vegetables, including all of your familar favourites such as: carrots, peas, salad mix, lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, radish, kale, squash, onions, turnip, pumpkins, eggplant, potatoes, beets, rhubarb, basil, cilantro, mint, and dill. Or if you’d like to try something new, we have, ground cherries, tomatillos, arugula, and a whole rainbow of Swiss chard.

Soiled Reputation offers top quality and (sometimes obscure) organic vegetables. The farm grows over a dozen varieties of tomatoes, purple tomatoes (Indigo Blue), Candy Cane beets, Jerusalem artichoke, All Gold Turnip, Golden Beets, and Dinosaur Kale.

Yeandle Farms, a family farm located near Woodstock, Ontario, is run by Jeff Yeandle and brother-in-law Bob Gilroy. The farm has been producing organic milk since June, 2005, after completing a mandatory four-year organic transition phase. The Yeandles’ herd of 65 Holstein cows is rotationally grazed on fresh grass from April to October, and fed a diet of hay, barley and corn in the winter months.
In 2000, the Yeandle cows were experiencing a variety of health problems. After attending organic seminars, the Yeandles found a close relationship between the soil and cow health, something not commonly talked about in conventional farming circles. By focusing more on quality soils and feed, they found less need for antibiotics, chemical fertilizers, herbicides and sprays and, by eliminating these inputs, they realized that producing organic milk was within their reach.
Since their organic conversion, Jeff and Bob have found that their animals’ immune systems have been much more responsive. “In the past, sick calves required our time and money. Now it seems they have stronger immune systems and are able to respond to illness on their own,” says Bob.
The Yeandle’s careful decision-making earned them a nomination for the 2007 Oxford Agricultural Federation Conservation Tillage Award of Excellence.
