Organic Farms

R.R. #2, 1611 Sideroad 30 S, Walkerton, ON, N0G 2V0

An early innovation in organic poultry has led the Poechmans to a pastured, free-run system of producing organic eggs. Our birds are happy and show their gratitude with their abundant egg-laying habits. Roosters accompany the girls for security & socialization. All the feed is prepared daily, on-farm, with mostly home-grown grains & oilseeds. Our eggs are hand-gathered, sorted and cooled for maximum freshness every day. The eggs are graded at HARC industries in Hanover, a great place for the engagement of the mentally & physically challenged. Our eggs are nature’s golden nugget in a perfect ready-to-serve package.

We started organic farming in 1989 with spelt being our first certified organic crop sold in 1990. We continue to grow spelt still as well as feed for our angus beef herd, which provide us with organic beef. In 2000 we added spelt dehulling to our farm operation, so now we grow, buy, dehull and sell spelt as well as raising Angus cross cows for organic beef.

Our Organic Beef

Our animals are treated humanely and have access to the outdoors for exercise and fresh air during the winter months. As soon as the weather permits and the grasses are ready, they are on pasture in the spring. All of which are requirements for organic certification.
The cows with their calves born in April and May are taken to their designated areas and rotated through pasture fields. A field next to our buildings is for “mob grazing” the calves one year old and older. Mob grazing is when 40 to 50 head of cattle are fenced in a small area (less than 1/4 acre) for 6 – 12 hours to forage the pasture. After they have trampled and eaten that section down, the fence is moved to allow them to dine on a fresh patch of pasture. This style of intensive grazing requires the fence to be moved 3 – 4 times a day. We have incorporated Gallagher Tumblewheels into our fence system, which make the task of rolling the fence line to a new place quick and easy, We have found the calves do well with intensive grazing and the soil has improved over time as well. Periodically some grass/legume seed is top-dressed to keep plant density good.

The use of drugs including antibiotics and growth hormones are avoided, as they are prohibited for organic certification. At first signs of distress, symptoms help diagnose disease or sickness and animals are treated with natural healing methods (i.e. herbal tinctures, homeopathy and natural remedies) like our grandparents used in the old days before pharmaceutical drugs were available. If an animal does not get well by using these methods, we will use conventional medicine.  That animal is not sold as organic, but rather into the regular conventional market.

Our newly renovated on-farm market features shelves upon shelves of locally grown fruits and vegetables. We stock the staples, like our signature corn and tomatoes & Essex County grown asparagus and strawberries. We also carry some off the wall items like locally grown bok choy, garlic scapes and over-sized green onions.  If it’s grown in our area, it’s in our market.

Our milk is processed and sold directly to our customers. As a result we can keep the prices down and make organic dairy products more accessible for everyone.   Our community will have back a small dairy processor creating jobs and helping the local economy.

On an organic farm our animals must go outside to exercise and socialize everyday weather permitting.  We compost their manure and work it into the soil immediately after application which minimizes smell and pathogens.  We use homeopathy to treat our animals for illness, although it is seldom necessary.  We think this is because they are eating healthier organic plants and are in an environment that is free from stress as much as possible.  As a result, they produce healthier milk.

We are very careful when we take our beef and chicken to the abbatoir.  We make sure it is done as humanely as possible.  We take this very seriously and we are thankful for the food.

We offer many local and organic whole foods all of which are available in our farm store and through our home delivery service.

It ALL starts at the farm. Our family-run farms work to the highest organic standards and are certified by Pro-Cert Organic Systems. Here, our birds are raised on wholesome, non-GMO organic grains with no added antibiotics. They also have space to roam in modern barns with natural light and ventilation, and have access to outdoor pastureland. This more holistic approach helps reduce bird stress, allowing their own immune system to keep them healthy. And we think you’ll agree it makes our products taste a whole lot better too!

The Tregunnos’ main crop on their 700 acre farm is peaches, but they also grow nectarines and plums as well as table and wine grapes. Their tender fruit is sold through the Vineland Growers’ Co-operative in Jordan, which distributes it to Canada’s major retail chains, and their wine grapes, including pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, merlot and cabernet, are contracted to different wineries in the region. Organic Agriculture

Our emphasis on certification is part of our enduring goal to produce great wines with a sense of place. And undergoing third-party certification is also essential to the leadership role we have committed ourselves to. Certification demonstrates that commitment in a verified, measurable way.

We handcraft these wines with grapes from our biodynamic vineyards, and from other organic vineyards in Niagara, for you to share with friends and family.

A quest for great beer, a love of good food and the desire to create an example of agriculture that not only showcases but inspires others to embrace a similar mindset, is what prompted us to purchase a farm and start growing hops. We feel obliged to try and put the ‘culture’ back into the ‘agriculture’ of our local area. We strive to be an example for others who want to balance being an entrepreneur and a  steward to the land, whilst making a living by doing what they love.

We started growing asparagus in 1982. My wife Claudia canned and pickled our produce for our own consumption. My sons and I just loved her recipe for pickled asparagus and you just can’t keep something like that all to yourself. We gave some to our friends as gifts. Of course, they just kept asking for more… and our business sprouted nicely from there.

With the help of our sons — Josh, Ben and Adrian — and Claudia’s wonderful creativity in the kitchen, we now offer 23 types of pickles. Half are certified organic. We do not use preservatives, fillers or additives. All the vegetables are processed right away, fresh from our fields. You can taste the sunshine in them.

We invite you to try our products. We know you’ll be thankful for the sun that shines down on our fields. Moreover, we will also be thankful; to have you as a customer.
